Why Kirkland Homeowners Choose Us

A Modern Staircase Built for Your Kirkland Home

Kirkland has a mix of homes that makes our job interesting. There are brand new waterfront builds going up near Juanita Beach, mid-century ranches in Houghton getting opened up with full gut remodels, and Craftsman-era homes across Norkirk and the Market neighborhood where homeowners want to modernize without losing the character of the house. Floating stairs fit into all of these situations because they add a modern element without taking over the space.

One thing we hear from Kirkland homeowners all the time is that they want more light between floors. Thats exactly what floating stairs do. Open risers and a minimal steel structure let daylight travel from one level to another instead of getting blocked by a solid wall of stair framing. In a city where the views of Lake Washington and the Cascades are half the reason people live here, blocking those sight lines with a bulky staircase makes no sense.

Floating Stair Services in Kirkland

Why You Need a Specialist Stair Contractor in Kirkland

We are not a general contractor who happens to do stairs on the side. Floating stairs are the only thing we build. That specialization matters because the engineering, the fabrication tolerances, and the finish quality on a floating staircase are all different from a standard stick-framed stair.

Kirkland has a strong community of architects, designers, and builders, and we work alongside many of them. If your architect has drawn a specific staircase into the plans, we can build exactly what they designed. If you dont have a designer, thats fine too. Our team walks you through every decision, from stringer type to tread species to railing style, so you end up with a staircase that fits your home and how you actually live in it.

Neighborhoods We Build In Across Kirkland

Floating Stairs Seattle serves homeowners throughout Kirkland, creating custom stair systems for everything from established properties to contemporary new construction and extensive renovations. Because each Kirkland neighborhood has its own character, we tailor the staircase to the home’s architecture, interior finishes, and overall scale rather than using a one-size-fits-all design.

In West of Market, Moss Bay, Lakeview, and Houghton, clean-lined interiors often pair well with mono stringer stairs, open risers, and streamlined glass or metal railings. Homes in Bridle Trails, Holmes Point, Finn Hill, and Juanita frequently offer more space for a floating staircase to become a defining architectural feature. In Rose Hill, Kingsgate, Totem Lake, and North Rose Hill, a custom stair system can also bring a more current look to an older home as part of a larger interior remodel.

We also work on projects in Market, Norkirk, Everest, South Juanita, Highlands, and surrounding Kirkland communities. Whether the project calls for a minimalist steel mono stringer, a warmer double stringer configuration, or a cantilever-inspired staircase with custom railings, we can design, fabricate, and install a system that feels fully integrated with the home.

Stairs & Railings

Pair with Railings
by Custom Railings WA

Our sister company, Custom Railings WA, builds railing systems specifically for the staircases we create. Coordinating both elements through the same team allows the structure, materials, proportions, and finishes to be developed as one cohesive design rather than treated as separate installations.

In a contemporary Kirkland home, this might include an open mono stringer staircase with glass railings to preserve natural light and maintain a clean interior. For properties in West of Market, Houghton, or Lakeview, a cantilever-inspired stair paired with frameless glass along an upper landing can create a refined, architectural look. In Bridle Trails, Holmes Point, or Finn Hill, a double stringer system may be better suited to warm wood treads, slender steel handrails, or cable infill.

Mono Stringer

Mono Stringer Stairs in Kirkland

A mono stringer staircase has a single steel beam down the center with treads extending out from both sides. Its the design we install most often in Kirkland because it hits the sweet spot between visual impact and practical function. One beam, clean symmetry, and a floating look that works whether your staircase is in the entryway, the living room, or tucked along a hallway wall.

Every mono stringer we build is fabricated from scratch for each project. We measure your space, engineer the stringer to your exact ceiling height and floor opening, and powder coat the steel in whatever color you pick. Matte black is the most popular by far, but we have done bronze, charcoal, white, and even a raw brushed steel finish for a client near Carillon Point who wanted an industrial look.

Kirkland townhomes and smaller floor plans benefit from mono stringers because the single-beam design takes up very little visual space. We have installed them in homes around Totem Lake, Rose Hill, and the new Kirkland Urban development where square footage is tight and every inch matters.

Double Stringer

Double Stringer Stairs in Kirkland

Double stringer stairs use two parallel steel beams with treads sitting between them. The look is more defined and structured compared to a mono stringer. This system is what we recommend when the staircase needs to be wide, when it includes turns or landings, or when you want a design that feels anchored and solid while still keeping the open-riser floating appearance.

A lot of the older homes in Kirkland, especially in Finn Hill and the Highlands, have multi-level layouts with long stair runs and switchback turns. Double stringer is the right choice for those because the two-beam structure handles the engineering loads better over longer spans. We have built L-shaped double stringer staircases in split-level homes and U-shaped configurations in two-story remodels all across Kirkland.

Cantilever

Cantilever Stairs in Kirkland

If you want the most dramatic version of the floating stair look, cantilever stairs are it. There is no stringer at all. Every tread is mounted directly into the wall using heavy steel brackets that are hidden inside the framing. From the outside, each step looks like it is suspended in midair. Its the kind of staircase that stops people mid-conversation when they walk into your home.

Cantilever stairs need a structural wall to anchor into, which means they are not an option in every home. But many of the newer builds in Kirkland already have the wall structure to support them, and for remodels, we can reinforce framing to make it work. We sit down with your builder or architect early in the process to figure out what the wall can handle and design the bracket system around it.

We have installed cantilever stairs in waterfront homes along the Lake Washington shoreline in Kirkland, modern builds near Juanita Bay Park, and high-end remodels in Lakeview. Add frameless glass railings and warm LED lighting under each tread and you end up with something that looks like it belongs in an architecture portfolio.

FAQ

Your Questions Answered

The price depends on which stair type you choose (mono stringer, double stringer, or cantilever), the number of treads, tread material, railing style, and the complexity of the layout. We provide free on-site estimates so you get an accurate number based on your actual space, not a rough guess.

The timeline depends on the complexity of the stair layout and the tread and railing materials selected.

Mono stringer stairs use a single steel beam running up the center with treads attached to both sides. The stringer is visible. Cantilever stairs have no visible stringer at all. Each tread is anchored directly into a structural wall with hidden steel brackets. Cantilever stairs create a more dramatic floating effect but require a load-bearing wall for installation.

Older homes sometimes need extra framing work, but the finished result looks the same as new construction.
