Why Floating Stairs Make Sense in Bothell
Bothell’s housing splits into two camps, and floating stairs help both. The new townhomes around downtown and North Creek are tall and narrow, with staircases stacked through the middle of the floor plan. A conventional staircase in that footprint eats light and makes every floor feel smaller. An open-riser floating stair does the opposite, moving daylight down through the levels and making a 20-foot-wide home feel considerably bigger than it is.
The other camp is the older stock in Maywood, Westhill, and the streets off Bothell-Everett Highway, where split-levels and ramblers from the 60s through the 80s are getting opened up. The railing is what your hand touches every day and what your eye reads from across the room, and pairing the wrong railing with a good staircase can undo the whole effect. For Bothell townhomes we usually suggest cable or thin steel rails, which keep tight stairwells feeling open without the cost of glass. In bigger remodels around Westhill and Fitzgerald, glass panels or horizontal steel bar rails give the staircase more presence. Double stringer stairs put a beam on each side of the treads instead of one down the middle. The structure is stiffer, the treads can run wider, and the staircase feels planted underfoot in a way people notice immediately. The twin-beam layout also gives us more design room. Thick slab treads, longer spans, L-shaped and switchback configurations, and integrated lighting all work cleanly on a double stringer. Each staircase is cut to the exact dimensions of your run, so it sits firm underfoot and drops into the opening cleanly.

Cantilever stairs are the no-visible-structure option. Steel brackets hide inside the wall and each tread projects out on its own, so the finished staircase looks like floating shelves you can walk on.
